About
In April 2025, Schroders Greencoat completed the acquisition of a 24.5% stake in the West of Duddon Sands Offshore Wind Farm, located approximately 14 km off the west coast of the United Kingdom.
The wind farm has a total generating capacity of 389 megawatts (MW) and has been operational since 2014. It supplies renewable electricity to the UK grid and benefits from a stable regulatory environment, including eligibility for Renewable Obligation Certificates ('ROCs') through 2034.
This bilateral opportunity builds on a long-standing collaboration with Ørsted, one of the world’s leading offshore wind developers. Ørsted remains the operator of the wind farm and retains a 25.5% interest in the project.
Why we invested
This investment was sourced through a bilateral process with Ørsted, reflecting Schroders Greencoat’s trusted position and long-term partnerships in the offshore wind sector. It aligns with our strategy of investing in established, operational assets that contribute to the energy transition while offering potential for long-term, inflation-linked income.
West of Duddon Sands has a strong operational history and is managed by a highly experienced utility. The project benefits from long-term policy support, with around half of its revenues either fixed or linked to inflation. These characteristics can offer resilience during periods of economic uncertainty and energy market volatility.
As with all infrastructure investments, actual outcomes depend on a range of factors including market conditions, asset performance and regulatory developments. Our aim is to identify high-quality assets that could provide stable performance over the long-term.
Value creation
Our approach to value creation is grounded in stewardship of essential infrastructure. West of Duddon Sands has been producing clean power for over a decade and continues to play a vital role in the UK’s energy mix.
The project operates under an existing long-term operations and maintenance agreement with Ørsted, helping to ensure consistency and reliability in day-to-day performance. With around 10 years remaining under the ROC support scheme, the wind farm is well-positioned to potentially continue generating contracted cash flows while contributing to national decarbonisation goals.
We also consider opportunities to optimise asset performance over time - such as through enhancements in operational efficiency or lifecycle management - while staying aligned with our long-term, risk-aware investment philosophy.
Sustainability
This investment forms part of Schroders Greencoat’s broader strategy to allocate capital towards climate change mitigation. West of Duddon Sands contributes to the UK’s offshore wind generation capacity and supports wider efforts to decarbonise the electricity sector.
Schroders Greencoat’s investment approach considers both financial and sustainability-related factors, recognising the long-term importance of infrastructure that aligns with evolving environmental and energy goals.
